SURGE 3D - VFX Highlights

SURGE 3D is a 3D remake of a custom-engine 2D platformer game I helped create two years ago for DigiPen (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/VgNPq8). This remake brings new life to the original with Unreal's powerful lighting tools, a 3D character, and VFX made using Niagara and Houdini. I was responsible for tech art and VFX development.

Gameplay programming was done by Max Plum (https://www.linkedin.com/in/max-plum/), the character was animated by Sabrina Martinez (https://www.artstation.com/sabrinarhianne), the city background and buildings were made by Connor Schultz (https://www.artstation.com/cjschultz).

Meet Bopp, the friendly neighborhood star. Bopp's power level diminishes over time and is increased by touching the signs and lights. He has 4 basic power modes: low, medium, high, and "party time"

And fireworks-mode for when you win.

I also made a dual-trail variant. I love the wobble when you run, but it detracted from the jump arcs and was ultimately scrapped.

Bopp's super solar power shorts out neon signs when he gets close to them. Any excuse for more sparks.

There were a few pickups you could collect on your way through the city.

And just for fun, here's the trailer for the 2 semester custom engine 2d game project that originated the concept for this game.
